Investigation of the Auditory Effects of Prolonged Noise Exposure on Call Center Employees

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the subscale scores of the Decreased Sound Tolerance Screening Scale (ASTÖ-T) between call center employees exposed to prolonged noise and individuals without such exposure. It also examined the relationship between hyperacusis, misophonia, and phonophobia in both groups. Hearing plays a vital role in human development and daily life, and excessive noise is considered a major occupational hazard that can lead to irreversible hearing loss. Call center employees are among the occupational groups at high risk for noise-induced auditory health problems. The study employed a descriptive research model, with data collected through standardized self-report scales. The study group consisted of 70 individuals working at the Trabzon 112 Emergency Call Center, while the control group comprised 63 academicians. Participants completed demographic forms and responded to Turkish versions of ASTÖ-T subscales. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results indicated significantly higher ASTÖ-T scores among call center workers compared to the control group (p<0.05), suggesting reduced sound tolerance. Gender differences were observed in the scores, with women showing higher sensitivity in certain dimensions. Lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption, listening to loud music, and tinnitus complaints were also associated with variations in sound tolerance levels. The findings underline the importance of occupational hearing protection and the need for regular auditory health monitoring in noisy work environments. Future research should involve broader samples and include clinical evaluations to better understand the long-term effects of noise exposure on decreased sound tolerance.
