Abstract
Electromyostimulation (EMS) is a low frequency electrotherapy application used in physical therapy and by athletes for training purposes. EMS is an effective method aimed directly at stimulating skeletal muscles, designed to facilitate the process of neuromuscular training and rehabilitation of different pathologies. In EMS applications, electrical signals are sent to muscle and nerve tissues by applying different levels of current to the individual through electrodes. Various parameters are used in the use of EMS for different purposes. As a result of changing the parameters, muscles can be stimulated in different ways and treatments for various purposes are possible. In the rehabilitation environment, it is generally preferred to improve muscle function in weak muscles, after injury or in different diseases. It is widely used especially in healthy individuals to rebuild muscle mass and in patients who cannot perform traditional exercise training programmes. In support of training, EMS helps athletes to achieve their muscle strength goals in a time-efficient manner. Whole body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) has also gained popularity in recent years due to its ability to activate all major muscles. The aim of this study is to define the EMS application, to provide an overview of its historical development, mechanisms of action and applications.
