Abstract
Aim: Exposure to nicotine during pregnancy is known to have harmful effects on the fetus, but its effect on the anomaly of fetuses having a common placenta is rare. This study aims to present the anomaly of monochorionic monoamniotic pregnancy and stillbirth that occurred in a rat exposed to nicotine during pregnancy.
Method: Wistar Albino rats were given 6 mg/kg nicotine subcutaneously from the beginning of pregnancy to the twentieth day (0-20.5 days). 20.5. The puppies were isolated by cesarean section on the first day. Fetuses and placentas removed from the amniotic sacs were weighed and photographed. Their physical conditions were examined.
Results: Eleven amniotic sacs were belonging to a pregnant rat. While it was observed that there were ten fetuses and ten placentas in ten amniotic sacs; It was observed that there was a placenta attached to two fetuses in one amniotic sac (monochorionic monoamniotic pregnancy). While ten fetuses were alive, two fetuses with a common placenta were stillborn.
Conclusion: Nicotine used during pregnancy may cause placental malformations and may also cause fetal death in monochorionic monoamniotic pregnancies.
