Analysis of News Published About Juvenile Pushed to Crime: The Example of Hürriyet Newspaper

Abstract

Aim: While carrying out activities to prevent juvenile delinquency in society, it is necessary to implement economic, social and political policies with a multifaceted perspective and to consider the best interests of the child. The increasing number of children pushed to crime requires multidisciplinary studies on juvenile delinquency. There have been many news about children pushed to crime in our country. The aim of this research is to categorize the news about children pushed to crime in the last 11 years, in the example of Hürriyet Newspaper, and to evaluate the existence of violations of children's rights in news presentation.

Materials and Methods: To determine the news to be included in the research, criteria such as being one of the newspapers with the highest circulation, having an online newspaper archive, and having the news between September 1, 2012 and September 1, 2023 were determined. A search was made in the Hürriyet Newspaper internet archive with the concept of "child pushed to crime”. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. Among the types of content analysis, categorical analysis was preferred. A data set was created with 170 news items.

Findings: 62% of the news about children pushed to crime was published between 2015 and 2018. In terms of the provinces where the news was reported, it was determined that approximately 60% of the news about children driven to crime were in metropolitan cities. 69% of the crimes in the news are within the scope of crimes committed in groups. In 40% of the news reports, children's faces or bodies were clearly shown.

Conclusion: A multidisciplinary understanding and dedication is required to solve the problems that cause juvenile crimes. In addition, attention should be paid to the protection of children's rights in this process.
